What is the Difference between NIN and NIMC?
The National Identification Number (NIN) is used to tie all records about an individual in the database and is also used to establish or verify his/her identity, while the National Identity Database enables NIMC to provide secure digital identity services across Nigeria and beyond.
Can Mistake in NIN be Corrected?
YES! If you have registered for National Identification Number (NIN) and you noticed a mistake in your application or you want to make changes in your data or update your details this page is for you, we have provided you step by step guide on how to do it online from the comfort of your home here.
The approve details that can be corrected in NIN include; name, date of birth, address, phone number, country, state, LGA, town/ village, father and mother NIN, father and mother town of origin/ village, father and mother state of origin, father and mother LGA of origin.
NOTE THE FOLLOWINGS:
- The date of birth can be modified once only and,
- The gender and NIN cannot be correct after registration
- The National Identification Number does not expire
What are the Requirements for Correction of NIN?
- Make sure your phone number is linked to your NIN registration if you are using NIMC shortcode service
- Modification requests are subject to verification and approval by NIMC
- You may be charged a fee for the modification service
How Much is NIN Data Correction?
The NIN correction fee is N500 per field (except for Change of Date of Birth which is N15,000 for processing your request only – non-refundable).
How to Correct Your NIN Mistake Online
To edit your NIN details online using NIMC shortcode;
- Dial *346# on your mobile phone
- Select “NIN Modification” option from the menu
- Enter your 11-digit National Identification Number (NIN)
- Verify that your NIN is correct and proceed to the next step
- Select the modification option you want to update (e.g., name, date of birth, address, etc.)
- Enter the new details you want to update
- Confirm that the new details are correct
- You will receive a confirmation code via SMS
- Enter the confirmation code to complete the modification process
- Finally, you will receive a confirmation message indicating that your NIN has been successfully updated

How Long Does it take for NIN Correction to Reflect?
Your new NIN modification data will be reflected on NIMC portal on or before 5 to 7 working days while a modification slip and a new NIN Slip with another tracking ID number will be sent to your registered email within few minutes after successful modification.
